And over here we have another game available on Steam—this one is called Oh…Sir!! The Insult Simulator from Gambitious Digital Entertainment. Let’s pause for a moment and take a look at it, shall we?
This game looks like another throwback to the old days, with blocky graphics and simple gameplay. It also tries to capitalize on some Pythonesque humor, up to—and including—a direct reference to the Dead Parrot Sketch.
If you have not watched Monty Python’s Flying Circus, do yourself favor and check it out, up to—and including—the Dead Parrot Sketch. And How Not to be Seen. And Fish Slapping Dance. And…
The basic premise of Oh…Sir!! is to choose a character based on certain strengths and weaknesses (or just because), pick a venue, and insult your opponent. The game gives you a list of insult set-ups such as “your dear auntie” or “smells like” from which you and your opponent take turns picking. You get two insult elements only you can see to throw in there, and each round also lets you sip your “cuppa” once to get two new insult elements which are yours only.
The character traits of your opponent can be used to improve your score. If your opponent has an overdeveloped sense of style, attacking his appearance will score you extra points. The venue will provide some insult elements which relate to the place; when you’re in the pet shop, for example, the animal cages become interesting insult elements.
The game lets you play against the CPU (aka, the game) or against another human player. There is also a tournament button if you really want to go at it.
But here’s the thing; humor being subjective, this game’s jokes seem targeted at a young audience. The insults just aren’t that imaginative or clever, even if they do throw in some elderberries.
Okay, I will concede to that one.
So Here It Is
This game can be a bit of fun for the younger crowd, but having grown up watching real Python, the insults come up short. The game favors insult length over wit or how on point you are. Some of the insults simply make no sense but still score well, while some short ones that are rather pithy don’t. As such, Oh…Sir!! is fine for a $1.99 purchase, but a bit disappointing for the long haul.
