Collect your Layers of Fear: Inheritance August 2nd
One of the most fun times I’ve had sitting in front of my Macintosh in the past few years involved Layers of Fear. This psychological horror game developed by Bloober Team and published by Aspyr is—according to critics and fans like me—one of the best horror games ever made.
But I didn’t like the ending. You get that sometimes with horror, but it was enough for me to begin my Layers of Fear review thus:
Had I reviewed Layers of Fear before this weekend, it would’ve had a slightly different tone. That’s because I was loving it. I was playing a chapter a night, and looking forward to doing so all day. But then the game ended, and I didn’t like the ending, so now I’m treating it with a little less reverence. That doesn’t mean you should play it, however. If you enjoy a good scare, you should absolutely play it.
You can check the review if you want to know my reasoning, but that’s not the focus today. Today I want you to know the game is getting another chapter this August, and it looks like it may help correct a couple of my issues with the original game.
Layers of Fear: Inheritance expands the plot from Layers of Fear and tells the story of the painter’s daughter, who comes back to her childhood home to face her past. Can she forgive her father, or will she resent all that has happened? Relive her experiences and witness the full scope of the tragedy that has swallowed up the family.
I watched some gameplay on Twitch last week, and can say Inheritance retains the creepy characteristics of the original: darkened hallways, unsettling noises, disturbing artwork, and darkened hallways. Did I say darkened hallways twice? Sorry, I meant to say it three times. Layers of Fear does love itself some long, darkened hallways.
But this time you get a flashlight!
There’s also a lot more narrative in this edition, so we’ll have to see how effective that is. The acting in the original game was one of its weaker elements, and it looks like we’re going to be getting plenty more of drunken, angry dad.
The Layers of Fear: Inheritance DLC will be available August 2nd for only $4.99. You’ll need the full game to play, of course, but that’s currently only $9.99 at the Mac App Store, and so totally worth it. This is your inheritance, after all. Claim it.
