Review: Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy for iPad

It all started going wrong 9 days ago. You’re struggling to gain a promotion and take command. Doesn’t help when your father is a war hero. Now the enemy has returned, and you’ve got your chance to rise to the call in Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy from Slitherine.

Star Hammer is an intensive vector based tactical space battle that is available on iOS for iPad only (also available on the PC and Mac). Given the amount of detail, it makes sense this doesn’t play on smaller iOS devices.

You gain command in a trial by fire and learn about the struggles of dealing with the return of the Nautilid as well as internal hassles and conspiracies. How you play each battle will determine what chapters will be made available.

The game is visually stunning, with fluid graphics that give the player full 3D control to move around the ships and plan your next move. During each turn, you can select any ship in your control and give it orders in speed, direction, weapons targeting, and the overall mode for the ship (full weapons, full shields, full engines, or a mixture of all). Once you’ve worked out what your ships will do, hit the play button to run out the action of that turn.

Star Hammer has an orchestral soundtrack to make the space battles epic. The other thing that’s epic, however, is the price. At $14.99, this is one of the higher priced games on the market, but keep in mind that this is the exact game that has been released for the PC and the Mac; there is nothing held back from the iOS version.

If you like space battles and are into turn-based strategy games, play your part in the Second Contact War as you play Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy from Slitherine!
