iOS to get two new Terra Battle games

Hey, wow. Terra Battle—Mistwalker’s fantasy RPG for mobile devices (and the app that finally proved to me the free-to-play/IAP business model could provide a legitimate gaming experience)—is getting not one, but two new titles this year. The studio founded by Hironobu Sakaguchi has just announced the Terra universe will expand with Terra Battle 2 and Terra Wars, both for iOS, Android and Windows.

Terra Battle 2

We don’t have much detail on either game yet, but the announcement did provide some basics.

Terra Battle 2 will apparently offer different game-play experience, while preserving the original’s core battle mechanics.

The new world map lets players travel alongside their companions and allows for more strategic gameplay as you set up your formation before entering a battle. The countless encounters and farewells throughout the course of your heroes’ journey promise to be even more emotional and intense than ever before.

How will the people who live on “Terra” unravel the truths and mysteries of their planet? An epic fantasy RPG awaits you.

The original Terra Battle consisted of recruiting myriad warriors and “companions” to engage in turn-based battles that involved swiping markers across the screen to entrap/attack enemies. From the looks of the provided screen shots, that mechanic will remain intact.

Leveling up your warriors provided them with additional (and highly necessary) powers that you could swap out to meet the challenges on hand.

The Terra Battle 2 teaser site provides an extended trailer that introduces the story. The art style and tone will look very familiar.

Then there’s Terra Wars, which is being co-developed by Mistwalker and Arzest. It will be based on characters from Terra Battle, but comes with significantly different art style. Check out its teaser site and you’ll instantly see what I mean.

At the site, Hironobu Sakaguchi says of the strategy behind the games and their art style that he intends to use, “… a similar numbering structure as my past work: the FINAL FANTASY series. Each installment of the ‘Terra’ franchise will have its disctinct feel, unique from any other.

“Yes, I have become old enough that some call me a ‘legend’ of the industry, but I wish to try and remain an active creator. Until the day I retire, I (secretly) wish to expand the ‘Terra World’ and create 9 experiences. (As I have created 9 installments for the Final Fantasy series.)”

Nine will be most welcome. In the meantime, we’ll be sure to keep you updated on the progress of these two.
