Hey David, check out this Red Dwarf game for iOS
On numerous occasions, my colleague David Temple will ask me if I ever watch Red Dwarf. The answer is no. I’ve watched enough to know what it is, but not enough to understand the myriad references David will make to it throughout the workday here in the beautiful PAG Towers.
David’s not in today, but I want to make sure he’s aware that UKTV, Grant Naylor Productions and GameDigits, Ltd. have released a Red Dwarf game for iOS. Anyone who happens across this article is welcome to read it, of course, but it’s more important to me that he knows about it.
So anyway, David, Red Dwarf XI: The Game will allow you to take command of the Red Dwarf and follow the characters on a journey through deep space, trying to find earth. The game mirrors the episodes within the series, but it also contains additional content written by Doug Naylor specifically for the game. I’ll therefore give you the review code, if we’re given one, since you’ll get much more than I would. Personally, I’ll continue to wait for Danger Mouse: The Game or the Benny Hill endless runner that I can’t believe no one has made yet.
Back to the matter at hand:
Players will experience an explosive mix of arcade, strategy and action games as they journey through their adventure. As the story unfolds they will unlock more games, collect special items and ultimately upgrade their ship. With a wide range of varied experiences, from blasting their way through an asteroid field, to trying to master Starbug’s complex control panels, this game sets out to be the most advanced and compelling Red Dwarf mobile game to date.
The press release then contains a bunch of quote from the people involved in making the game. You don’t need to know about that. But remember how we were talking in church about how we need to publish more exclusive interviews? This is a great opportunity. I’ll put in the request for you.
Meanwhile, more from the press release:
As players progress through the game, they unlock more content and achieve an overall score, ranked alongside other players worldwide via the on-line leaderboards.
One of the most interesting concepts used in this game is that it follows series XI’s storyline, along with additional sub-plots, written by Doug Naylor, specifically for the game. Frequent free updates will be released as the series progresses, mirroring the storylines featured in the episodes as shown on Dave.
Red Dwarf XI : The Game is available now in the iTunes App Store at the reduced price of $1.99, so go ahead and grab it instead of waiting on a review code (remember, you can claim the purchase on your taxes). Be careful, though…apparently the game “includes spoilers from episode 1 Twentica.”
Finally, I’m not sure if I’ll be in church on Sunday. Tieraney wants to go to Fairy Meddler or some such outdoor craft fair, and we’re still debating whether that’ll happen this Sunday or next.
