BANDAI NAMCO announces Tales game for mobile devices
Console devotees may lament the trend, but it looks like another popular franchise is expanding its mobile love. BANDAI NAMCO has just announced a mobile entry in the Tales franchise: Tales of the Rays.
The Tales series was launched in 1995 with Tales of Phantasia, and has since seen around 15 additional games released for everything from the Nintendo GameCube to Windows to PS4. Tales of Link is already up in the App Store, and Tales of the Rays will be joining it this summer, promising to bring “the intense 3-D gameplay that Tales fans love from the console series to mobile platforms.”
In Tales of The Rays, players travel across diverse landscapes with heroes Ix and Mileena, exploring dungeons full of treasures and battling monstrous enemies in an epic quest to revive their world. Past Tales heroes will make appearances in the game as experienced adventurers who provide Ix and Mileena with guidance as they embark on their journey. Tales of The Rays features console-quality graphics and gameplay, including the all-new Linear Motion Battles system, with simple controls optimized for mobile devices. Players can unleash devastating attacks with the new Mirrage Artes. Fans can look forward to stories told through animated cut-scenes with the classic soundtrack and music, as well as limited time events with special bonuses.
Looking to tighten the connection to previous entries, the story, music and game design for Tales of the Rays is being handled by the same team that brought us the console entries.
It sounds like the type of game for which we’d be happy to pay a premium, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Tales of the Rays will be free, which also means IAPs like with Tales of Link before it. How those purchases are implemented, we’ll just have to wait and see.
