Share the horrors of war with the whole family!

This War of Mine (available for Mac and iOS) is a fantastic but very sobering (and quite depressing) survival strategy game in which you’re tasked with keeping a band of survivors alive in a war torn country. You scavenge for food, medicine, tools and weapons, but these are scarce, and it’s up to you decide how to use what you have, then face the consequences that arise from your decisions. Do you steal from an elderly couple to save your friend? Take in homeless children when you already can’t feed your own group?

In his review of This War of Mine for Public Access Gaming, Bill Stiteler gave the game an A grade, stating:

“I’d call This War of Mine a resource management game, but the resources are so unreliable that it’s really about managing the misery of your characters. Set during a civil war where there is no functioning government, and soldiers on both side shoot to kill, your band must work together to survive not just physically (by finding enough food) but mentally (by getting enough sleep, finding ways to relax, and responding to moral choices in the game).”

If that sounds like a fun night around the family dinner table, you’ll be happy to know that developer 11 bit studios is bringing This War of Mine to the tabletop.

This War of Mine The Boardgame

This War of Mine The Boardgame will feature a multiplayer experience for up to 6 players, as well as a solo variant, both of which will present you with hundreds of new challenges and difficult choices.

The boardgame significantly broadens the original game’s universe and emphasizes the depth of the plot, yet its main focus will be on human interactions driven by survival instinct and group decision-making.

We don’t have many details on the game yet, other than that it “…will be extremely ambitious because it aims to omit the usual boardgame threshold—This War of Mine the board game will be an instant-play game, with no need to read the manual before starting the adventure.”

In other words, hey, your apartment has no walls and no food and everyone’s sick. Have fun!

This War of Mine The Boardgame is being deveoped by veteran board game designer Michal Oracz (designer of Neuroshima Hex, Earthcore: Shattered Elements, Neuroshima RPG, Theseus: The Dark Orbit, De Profundis and more) and Jakub Wisniewski (translator and story designer for Earthcore: Shattered Elements, Dying Light and others). It will work in tandem with an additional app offering digital content to enrich the player’s experience with features like the soundtrack, live story updates, scenario-triggered scripts, cutscenes, game-related puzzles, mini-radio plays, hidden secrets, unlockable content, hand-drawn concept art for in-game locations and much more.
